My
name is Sara. I'm a stereotypical single woman who has just turned 30.
I live alone with three cats in a studio apartment in the heart of
Detroit - the most economically depressed urban area of the country.
It's only the second most violent though. St. Louis beat us in that
respect. This is
not how my life was supposed to turn out.
I've lived and worked all over the country. I spent ten years chasing a
dream that I had as a child. I wanted to make Broadway costumes. (what,
isn't that every child's dream???) I single-mindedly persued that goal
for ten years, making sure that I was working the right jobs to go on
my resume that would get me into the right schools that would introduce
me to the right people that would get me to Broadway. In April of 2004
I graduated with a Master of Fine Arts from the University of North
Carolina (go Tarheels!), two weeks later I moved to New York to be a
Draper Assistant at Barbara Matera's, Ltd. I really and truly loved my
job. But I very quickly realized that I am not and will never be a New
Yorker. Living in that city made me paranoid and miserable. I finally
accepted that I'm just a white girl from the midwest and that's where I
belong. In September of 2004 I moved back to Grand Rapids. It took a
lot longer to adjust to being home than I thought it would.
Occasionally I miss the excitement and creativity of working in
theatre, but once I remember that with the excitement also comes a
truly immense amount of stress, outrageous egos that have to be dealt
with, and a whole lot of unneeded drama the rose colored glasses come
off and I realize that leaving that environment was a good choice.
Currently I am working on getting a Masters of Library and
Information Sciences degree at Wayne State University because is there
anything more stereotypical than a glasses wearing, cat owning,
spinster that works as a librarian? Of course not, I am that dedicated
to
this blog.
I sew, knit, and spin in my spare time. I listen to a lot of NPR. In
the summer I have a garden in which I grow odd heirloom tomatoes and
roses. Everything I own is covered in cat hair. |
People
do different things to help them cope when going through a few tough
years. Some drink, others gain a little weight, some run up credit card
debt. I adopted stray kittens.
This really surprised me, I always thought I'd be a drinker, not a
crazy cat lady.
These are my boys. As you can see they are a very classy bunch. Harvey
is quiet, sensitive, and a great hunter. He tends to be very shy around
people he doesn't know. He also enjoys playing in the toilet. Marty is
a very pretty orange tabby. He's very sweet and affectionate but dumb
as a brick. I think that in a past life he was a big yellow lab and the
only thing that has changed is that he now has a cat's body. He's also flamingly
gay. He's Harvey's bitch, they make an adorable couple. Foster is my
little cow kitten and is scarily smart (for a cat.) There is nothing he
can't open or get into. He also whines, a lot. In a very high pitched
voice. He has an opinion on just about everything and has no problem
letting you know exactly what he's thinking. When he farts he can clear
a room. |

This is
Teddie. She's a 14 yr old miligold macaw.
She's also a real bitch. I adopted her when I was only 16, and while I
had done my research before getting a macaw, a 16 year old simply
cannot comprehend that this animal will be with you FOR THE REST OF
YOUR LIFE. And she will make it very hard for you to live in any sort
of apartment building. All three cats are terrified of her and she
rules the house with an iron claw. I've stopped counting the number of
times she's attacked poor Marty (although sometimes the little bitch
deserves it.) I'm the only person who isn't scared of her and for that
I have her unconditional love (sometimes this is not a good thing.) She
is my first line of defense against intruders and people I don't like.
They don't stand a chance. |
| This is
my niece Amelia. She's 2 and acts likes she's 15, but not in a
bad way (yet.) She's just very opinionated, smart, and independant. She
also has a bit of an exhibitionist streak. She is her mother's
daughter. She's added so much to our family that I can't wait to see
what things will be like once her brother or sister gets here in
October. |
