the world needs more bloggers
By me • May 12th, 2008 • Category: blogs I read, today's blog 365 postA few years ago I started blogging as a cheap form of therapy. I had no expectations when I started, I knew nothing about the “blogosphere,” and quite honestly, while I liked writing, I just didn’t think that being part of the community was for me. But then I got bored at work one day and started reading knitting blogs, which led to me joining Ravelry, and then NaBloPoMo, and finally Blog365 (in which I lasted for, oh, about 6 weeks.) And in those networks I discovered that the most incredible people in the world are bloggers. You have this global network of people reaching out, beyond our immediate surroundings, making these connections with each other that would have been unheard of 10 years ago. And you find yourself getting attached to these people, cheering when they get a new job, laughing when they unintentionally use their pregnancy to make a hostess cry, drooling over their fiber projects, commiserating about school, having your heart ache for them when they have sad news, and being so happy for them you clap your hands and squeal with excitement when the reveal their big secrets. And it works both ways, you know they’re out there rooting you on too.
How do you know I know they’re out there rooting me on? Well, people comment on each other’s blogs. We email each other. And occasionally you get wonderful surprises in the offline world.
Let’s say it’s a rainy Sunday evening, your spirits are a little down, and you go down to the mailroom in your building to check your mailbox. You don’t check it more than once a week because all your bills are paid online, and really not that many people have this address so it’s usually just junk mail. But this time there’s a package, all the way from New Zealand. And inside is the miracle mood lifter - chocolate.
The card reads “This week I’m sending a number of packages around the world for birthdays, weddings, and so on, so I thought I’d another one and send you some chocolate too - as it sounded from your blog like you needed some.” - Teopea
Teopea, you are so incredible, thank you! thank you! THANK YOU! Life has settled down a little bit since you sent these out, but just knowing that my emergency stash has all this in it makes me feel better!
And everyone else, go start a blog. Right now. And read other people’s blogs. You will meet the best people in the world. I promise.

What a wonderful surprise!
YES!!! I totally agree.
Oh, I don’t know what to say to such a lovely post
I’m so glad it brightened your day a little
I completely agree! I’ve met some of the best people I know (you being one of them!) through my blog, and only wish I could meet more of my internet friends in person.
And wow! That chocolate is looking mighty delicious right about now. What a great surprise! I love getting mail, period, but who wouldn’t love a surprise care package?
What a lovely post! The friends one makes in the blogosphere are truly wonderful. There aren’t many people around my age here in Tasmania (not just my imagination, our population graph looks like an apple core with big bites out of the 18-36 year age group) so sometimes it’s hard to find people here with common interests. Not so on the Internet!
That is such an awesome surprise!!! I completely agree with your sentiments about blogging - there’s a reason I save all my blog reading until the end of the day - it’s like I’m catching up with my friends at the end of the day!
What a brilliant surprise! Bloggers are the best.
