riverfront walk

Monday is the one day I have to get ready for the rest of the week. The rest of the week is non-stop classes, meetings, and work. So any errands that need to be run, housework that needs to be done, plans I need to finalize, and naps I think I may need - they all have to be done on Mondays. And honestly, it’s not a bad way to start the week. Sure, I’m running around all day, but it makes the rest week run smoothly. And gives me a chance to make my apartment at least look like a functioning and responsible adult lives here.

I also use Mondays to double check and finalize all the homework that’s due during the week. Believe it or not this is the first time since I’ve gone back to school that I’ve actually had to turn in a physical paper. I’ve written plenty, but up to this point my professors have all been of the younger, technologically savvy breed of librarians so everything has been handed in online. Not so much this semester. In fact my collection development class started with the professor saying

I’ve been a librarian for forty years. I got tenure in 1976. They’d have to fire ninety-five percent of the people at this university before they could fire me.”

Oh, to have that kind of job security…. So anyway, like it or not, we’re doing things old school this semester. Which means blue books (I was amazed that they even existed anymore), printed papers, and lots of red ink to decipher. In preparation for tomorrow I finally plugged in my printer this morning only to realize I had no black ink or paper. Which really doesn’t surprise me. Hell, I don’t even remember the last time I printed anything. Luckily there’s a Staples a few miles away from me. (shocking, but there are some companies that actually do have stores in downtown Detroit.)

As I was driving back home I detoured to see the Detroit riverfront. Now I can literally see the river from my windows, hear the barges as they go up and down the river, but I’ve never been down there. Today it was just so sunny, breezy, and mild out that I couldn’t force myself to go back home right away. What was the point? After all, the cats were napping, my homework for the week was done, and the only thing waiting for me back in the apartment was some laundry that needed to be put away. So I parked the car and went for a little walk. What I saw was a little shocking, Detroit from this angle actually looks appealing.

  1. I’m used to seeing it from a slightly different, but still appealing angle. I’m from Windsor. :)

  2. It’s amazing how seeing things from new angles can make them look lovely.

  3. Interesting. Sadly, I would have never thought that “Detroit” and “appealing” could be used in the same sentence until this picture…

(Which I know isn’t giving it a fair chance, I admit it!)

  4. Hmm, could it be the self-adjusting Dr. Holley? I will have to tell you the story if it is. It is a short, yet mildly disturbing, story.
