battle of the water bowl

By me • May 16th, 2008 • Category: cats, today's blog 365 post

I have learned from experience that when Harvey and Foster team up you need to watch your back. Independently they are both smart, curious, tenacious little shits. When they work together they are a force to be reckoned with.* Mice and bugs better run for their lives, toys are demolished in the blink of an eye, and the water bowl is emptied in mere minutes.

My cats are finicky water drinkers. They’ll eat just about anything (seriously. the list of things Foster has tried to help me eat is amazing - including but not limited to bran muffins, bananas, yogurt, pickles, edamame, pasta, blueberries, swiss cheese, and oatmeal. He also plays fetch, constantly. He’s half cow kitty, half Jack Russell Terrier), but their water better be fresh, cold, filtered, and it sure as hell better be nicely presented. Or they will help themseves to yours. At least Harvey and Foster will, Marty’s not quite as particular. (if you forget to put the seat down he’s all about drinking out of the toilet) They used to have a hand-me-down water fountain that worked quite well but a few weeks ago the pump finally died. I had gotten them a cheap automatic waterer, hoping that it would work until I had the money to buy something better. And it’s really been a big hit, just not in the way I intended.

They have become absolutely obsessed with it. They NEED to see the bubbles. At first they’d just sit there, splashing the water out, soaking the floor, in order to see the bubbles go up in the resevoir tank as it emptied. It was non-stop. I’d even be woken up at 3:30 in the morning, hearing “splash, splash, splash” as Harvey sat there batting at the water and Foster watched, trying to catch the ever-elusive bubbles. But they’re not dumb, it wasn’t long before they learned a quicker and easier way to feed their bubble watching needs.

Little shits.

*I have no doubt that, if given half the chance, they would take over the world.

  1. Man, I hate it when they get all creepy smart. When we had the water tower our younger cat Beentsy (okay, we call her fat Beentsy) would back up to the water tower the hit it with her bum and quickly spin around to watch the bubbles in the water tower. Every day we’d come home to an empty water bowl and a hugely wet floor. Needless to say the water tower had to go and she had to learn to live with the stainless steel bowl. I wonder if we’d get like that if we had as much free time on our hands? Probably eh?

  2. Oh, that’s hilarious! Both my cats were staring at me strangely while I was laughing at this. I can’t let them see your video. Don’t want them getting any ideas.
