library tidbit of the day pt.2

This is what I learned in class today:

In order for an item to be copyrighted it must be sent to the copyright office at the Library of Congress. Once the item has been copyrighted the LOC then has the option to catalogue it and include it in it’s collection. Some items, such as certain fiction and pornography do not fit with the Library’s mission statement, and therefore do not become part of it’s collection once it has been copyrighted, and the item is dispensed of.

At one point the copyright office had received a pornography video and copyrighted it, but obviously did not include it in it’s collection. A few years later a revised copy of the video showed up in the office. In order for that version to be copyrighted the department must be able to find significant differences between the two. It wasn’t until a worker in the office was able to produce the original copy from his personal collection that they could find the differences between the two versions and therefore issue the second copyright.

The moral of this story? If you want free porn work for the Library of Congress copyright department.

  1. Haha, you know I thought you were in my class, and now I know for sure; we’ve blogged the exact same piece of information from today’s lecture. (The only really interesting part of it, if I do say so myself.)
