it’s official

I’m a dumbass.

I’ve been living at coffee shops, and last night, desperate to feed the beast and get rid of the withdrawal symptoms from both the caffeine and the internet I was at the Beaner’s on Woodward, checking my email, and enjoying a vanilla latte. And then someone from the table behind me got up, knocked into my chair, causing me to bump forward, and spilling the latte all over my computer.

From now on all I’ll be using are sippy cups, even without the computer.

I panicked, called everyone I could think of, and I’m now at the Apple Store in Troy, recovering from the bad news of how much this is going to cost me (more than a month’s rent)

If you don’t hear from me, it’s because I don’t have my computer back yet. Or AT&T hasn’t gotten me online yet. Because I’m sure as hell not going into a coffee shop with it any time in the near future.

Update: so, before agreeing to ship it out an pay the absolutely enormous flat fee I asked them to take the keyboard off and make sure that it was definitely what needed to be done. I knew the bottom row of the keyboard sticks a little bit, and some coffee residue was found in the battery compartment, but the machine powers on and works just fine.

They were a little skeptical that I asked for a second opinion, but went ahead and agreed to open it up for me after I gave them the “I just moved here a week ago to go back to school and don’t have a job yet” song and dance (honestly, even I thought it was a very moving performance.) At that point I had basically resigned myself to paying the extra money and was wishing the mall had a liquor store to pass the time while they examined it and then told me that I was fucked.

About 20 minutes later the woman I was working with motioned for me to come over and said that really, once they opened it up, there was hardly any damage inside. Just the tiniest bit of coffee residue near the ram. She suggested that I take it home, back it up, and just wait and see if things will be fine. So as I’m typing this my brand new external hard drive is backing everything up, and I’m crossing my fingers and hoping for the best.

But I’m still going to be buying myself some sippy cups.
