an impromptu photo shoot
By me • Sep 24th, 2007 • Category: Ravelry, cats, knitting(disclaimer- there will be lots of cat photos at the end of this post, if that doesn’t interest you come back tomorrow)
So I’ve been obsessed with Ravelry lately. Really, really obsessed. Why? Because I’m a big geek. For those of you that aren’t fiber geek bloggers it’s sort of like MySpace for spinners, knitters, and crocheters. But it’s so much more than that. It’s a place to organize and catalogue your stash, needles, and projects (this part makes the inner geek in me so very very happy.) A place to show off your finished objects. A place to ask questions. A place to look for new projects (this has already gotten me into trouble, and by trouble I mean three new skeins of sock yarn and a new set of bamboo double points just last week - and I’m eyeing some new addis this week.) A place where you can get great ideas by looking at what other people of have done with that single skein of yarn you’ve been dragging from house to house for years. A place to meet other fiber bloggers, some even in your area. And it’s so popular, but still in beta, that you have to wait months to get an invite.
When you finally do get your invite it’s an experience much like being the geeky kid in third grade with glasses and pigtails suddenly being asked to sit with the cool kids during lunch. You want to jump up and down and squeal with excitement. But you’d be embarrassed displaying that much childish enthusiasm so you are instead determined to look cool. You suddenly want to do everything to make yourself fit in with everyone else and look like an organized, accomplished, really cool knitter (which I’m so not - a month after moving my stash is still in boxes.) So you start taking pictures of your yarn stash and projects to put up on your page, and worry that you’re stuff just isn’t up to snuff because you’re one of those people that always has tons of really great ideas but you never seem to get around to making any of them, but you keep going anyway. Being the easily influence third grader that I am, today I was trying to get some of my yarn photographed when the scope of the project changed -

The artist has arrived for his photo shoot.

It wasn’t in his original vision, but he supposes that the props will be acceptable.

He is obviously too sexy for this yarn.

He is ready for his close-up.

Hey, I think I found your blog through Ravelry. It really is the best thing since sliced bread. Love the cat shots. My cats do the same thing. It must have been me overphotographing them when they were kittens because now I can’t get out the camera without them thinking they’re the stars of the show.
For months, everyone has been going on about Ravelry, and I kept thinking “meh, it sounds like Facebook for knitters. And I don’t ‘get’ Facebook.”
And then I finally got the invite, and I was right, it’s exactly like Facebook - except with YARN!!! I ‘get’ yarn! Serious geekdom ensued. Now I *don’t* want to take pictures of my stash, because most of my stash isn’t classy enough to hang out with the cool kids. I need better stash. Sigh.
Your cat has a great face.
