complete yarn lust

Today the 2007 Spring Knitty came out. Typically I find a pattern or two that I print out and put into my gigantic binder of patterns that may or may not be made sometime in my lifetime. A pattern has to be pretty damn special for me to push it to the top of the list of things to do and actually start working on it right away. Today I found one of those patterns:

I want these socks. I need these socks. Right now, or preferably sooner. I want to take a week off work and do nothing but sit at home and make these socks. It took so much self control to not order four skeins of Regia Silk color #91 Pewter or in the #10 Mocha. While in my fantasy world I like to think I could be sexy and adventurous enough to pull off the burgundy like the woman in the photo without feeling self-conscious, in reality I’m much more practical and reserved, I’m a dark neutral sock kind of girl.

However I stopped myself from pulling out my credit card because:
1. I’m currently on a tight deadline for a pair of socks that need to be done for a friend’s birthday. AND I want to join the sockapalooza 4 knit along this year (in the right hand column, halfway down the page.) So there’s lots of other sock knitting to be done already. But there’s no way in hell I could resist working on these instead once I got my hands on some silk sock yarn.
2. I’m trying to save money so I’m doing my best to cut out all unnecessary spending (read: no more eBay.) Therefore, I cannot justify spending $40 on a pair of socks that I would need to make myself (you non-knitters out there had no idea knitting was such an expensive hobby, did you?)
3. I have six unfinished projects on the needles right now. While this may not seem like a lot to the experienced knitters out there, it’s more than I’ve had in a long time. The plus side of this situation is that whenever I get bored working on one project there’s always another one to pick up, but it also means that it takes forever to finish something. Not to mention that there’s the spinning to take up my time whenever I get bored with knitting in general. If I started them now the chances of me having them done in time for the winter of ‘07 are very slim.

Sadly it doesn’t look like I’ll be getting them any time soon. However, in the current issue I also found this sweater that I want to make for Amelia, and I’m pretty sure I have some yarn in my stash that will work so it theoretically shouldn’t cost anything to make. (It’s great having small children to make things for, the clothing is small so it doesn’t take very long, and you can make things in all the colors you like but would never wear as an adult because children don’t care if a color washes them out or clashes with their hair) So while it might not make it to the top of the list immediately, it’s definitely in the top ten, which means she might have it by the time she’s ready to start kindergarten.
