bnl are me
By me • Sep 14th, 2006 • Category: BNLUPDATE: people have been having problems listening to the one song I want everyone to hear but not the other two that I put in for shits and giggles. I think I’ve fixed the problem so please try it again.
I’ve had the album for two days now and I’m still not sure how I feel about it. I’ve been listening to it pretty much non-stop when I’m not at work, although today I even played a few songs while my coworkers were picking up lunch today. I’m not sure why I can’t stop listening, I think I’m still trying to figure it out, and since I got the deluxe album there are 27 songs to listen to, which is a lot of music.
Like all BNL albums it has a unique sound and it’s completely different from the one preceding it. Their previous album, Everything to Everyone, sounded very polished and smart. This one is dark, raw, and emotional. At least that’s the initial impression I’m getting, but that could just be because I’m hopped up on allergy meds at the moment (due to the rain the last few days my basement is leaking and the mold problem is flaring up again with a vengence at my house so I’ve had to stay constantly medicated in order to breathe) This album has made me think more than any of their others have, which is great - the lyrics are witty and biting - but it’s not music to escape and relax with. Not that it can’t fun to listen to - I was blaring Angry People on my way home from work today and having a blast singing along. But there’s one song I can’t stop listening to - Fun & Games.

into you address line. It’s the first time I’ve tried to link to a sound file so I might have completely fucked it up)
I’ve always known that the ladies were Mac-loving, Prius-driving, self-described geeky liberals. It’s one of the reasons I love them so much. (However I would like to clarify that I’m not the kind of fan who wants to sleep with any of them, I’m more the type of fan that wishes they were all my cool older brothers so I could hang out with them) But their music has never before had the political bite that this song has. Sure, the last album had Shopping on it, but unless you’re a geek like me and had read that they wrote it in response to Bush telling the public in the weeks after 9/11 that they needed to get on with their lives by getting out and go shopping again you wouldn’t have necessarily picked up the subtext. You would have thought “hmm, that’s an odd little non-sensical song” and fast fwded through it the next time you listened to the album. Fun & Games has no subtext, it’s all right out there. I love the carnival bit, I keep rewinding the song to listen to it again and again. In fact I think I’m going to go listen again right now. Let me know what you think.
