the first of many

Yesterday my youngest sister’s friend Sarah and her husband Mike had a beautiful baby girl! Elizabeth is the first of many babies due to be born into my community of family and friends within the next few months. So many babies are due that you would begin to suspect that it was some sort of contagious epidemic. Something was in the water nine months ago making everyone have lots and lots of sex, well, everyone but me, but that’s a whole other post.
Trina has been eagerly anticipating Elizabeth’s birth since Sarah told her she was pregnant. A few months ago Sarah asked her if she would like to be there when she went into labor - partly because they are such good friends but also because Trina is a very level headed RN who isn’t at all grossed out by bodily functions. Sarah wanted someone she knew in the room that wasn’t going to freak out and get overly emotional, someone unlike her mother and husband.
Everything went well, the new family is happy and healthy, so yesterday afternoon Trina took Amelia to go see the new baby. We were all very curious to know how Amelia, who is so advanced that at a mere 15 months is throwing temper tantrums with dramatics to rival any 2yr. old, would handle her most favorite Aunt in the world holding another baby. I wasn’t there to see the actual events, but I was fwded the following pictures to document the occasion.

According to eyewitnesses things went surprisingly well. At first she was a little apprehensive about the baby - when Trina was holding her she needed have the baby where Amelia could see it at all times. Trina claims she was just curious, but I’m pretty sure she just wanted to keep an eye on her. It was more than likely one of those “keep your friends close and your enemies closer” situations. As long as Amelia was watching Elizabeth wasn’t going to be able to pull any cute stuff .
In a show for the adults in the room she then proceeded to share not only her crackers, doll, and Aunt Trina’s wallet with the baby (is it bad that already the child knows how to steal and empty a wallet of cash and credit cards without you knowing?) but wanted to give her a drink as well. Unfortunately Elizabeth is still too young to know that it’s impolite to refuse a sippy cup of Lactaid when it’s shoved in your eyeball.
At the end of the visit Amelia was allowed to “hold” the baby with Aunt Trina’s help. She even gave her a hug and kiss goodbye. Trina took that to mean that she loved the baby. Apparently Trina hasn’t seen any mobster movies.
