packing again

By your third interview in two months you have learned a few things to make life a little bit more pleasant for yourself. Tuesday morning I fly to Tulsa for a two day interview, which is sure to be exhausting. But I’ve created a few rules for myself that will hopefully make this trip much more comfortable than the last two. Whether or not I will follow them is still up in the air.

  1. Comfortable Shoes. I cannot overestimate this. You will be going ALL DAY. From the time you leave the house (approx. 4:30 am) until they drop you off at the hotel (approx. 10 pm) The will be tours, lots of tours. Different people showing you the same thing two, three, even four times.
  2. Bring bottled water. You will not like the taste of the tap water at the hotel, and they will charge you at least $1.75 for a dinky little bottle out of the vending machine. Plus you will have had at least 4-5 cups of coffee, so you will be dehydrated.
  3. Painkillers and Bandaids must be packed, because you obviously won’t listen to rule#1.
  4. Control Top nylons may normally be your friend, but not when you will be wearing them all day. Especially when it takes various contortions to get them on and off , as you will be consuming much coffee, and we all know you have a small bladder.
  5. Pack stuff to do. You might not have a lot of down time at the hotel, but you won’t want to go to bed right away, and sock knitting is made for traveling.
  6. Always check you overnight bag. Seriously, you won’t have to drag it all over the airport. You won’t get it into the plane and realize it won’t fit in an overhead compartment because it’s a puddle jumper, be given a pink tag, and have the stewardess have them put it in cargo anyway. You won’t have to wait next to the plane to collect it. You simply take a leisurely walk to baggage claim and pick it up, next to no hassle involved.
  7. Pay attention to the steward(ess) when she/he is going through the inflight instructions. Of course you know what he/she is going to say. She/he knows you know what he/she is saying, but let’s face it, his/her job sucks. And you can at least be polite, unlike the assholes ignoring them and talking on their cellphones long after the captain has asked them to turn them off. Not to mention they’ll be much nicer to you during the flight if you do pay attention.
  8. Pack stuff to pamper yourself. Such as lotion - for face and body. Yes, you are trying to travel light. But I know that Tuesday night, after too much coffee and not enough water or sleep your skin will look like crap. Or at least you will think it does. Which will make you feel less confident. Which isn’t good for the second day of the interview. You can deal with your body issues when you get home, do whatever it takes to make yourself feel confident when you’re out there.
