knitting with light sabres
By me • Apr 30th, 2006 • Category: knittingYes, I am a
fibre geek. I’m a draper with a MFA in Costume Technology. I’ve spent years and more money than I care to think about at the moment studying how to flat pattern, drape, sew, fit, etc… and I have no problem stating that I am a professional
. Being surrounded by fabric/costume/clothes all the time you’d thing I’d have a hobby very far removed from my occupation - like skydiving, pottery, or gardening. Instead I knit. And it is completely different from sewing, no matter what you may think. To me knitting is relaxing. I’m not as much of a perfectionist with my knitting as my sewing and patternmaking. A twisted knit stich does not bother me the way a improperly sewn and pressed dart does. Knitting is portable. I can put a sock I’m working on in my purse. My sewing machine alone (an industrial Juki DDL 8500) weighs over 100 pounds. And then there’s the dress forms, the cutting table, the scissors (I have 30 pairs, mostly Gingher with a few Mundial thrown in for good measure), the patterning curves and rulers, etc… and that doesn’t even begin to cover the materials you need to make a well constructed garment. Knitting also has fun gadgets - via another blog I found Lighted Knitting Accessories on eBay. Yes, they are tacky and impractical. No, I probably wouldn’t use them except when I was drunk. But still, they’re so cool, it would be like knitting with light sabres! So consider this a reminder - my birthday is June 3rd - there’s plenty of time to get some ordered and delivered. And the drop spindle would be appreciated too.
